Synopsis
Winter closes around the March home, but inside, four sisters are making a world of their own. While the Civil War rages and their father serves as a Union army chaplain, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy share worn dresses, secret ambitions, and the warmth their mother keeps alive. Meg dreams of love and a home; Jo wants her stories to carry her beyond the life expected of a young woman. Beth finds courage at the piano, while Amy reaches for beauty, art, and a life beyond poverty. Across the hedge, lonely Laurie discovers a place among them. There are makeshift plays, glittering parties, bitter quarrels, and pages lost to the fire. Then illness enters the house, and the future no longer feels safely distant. As childhood gives way to uncertain love and difficult choices, the sisters must decide what they can surrender and what they must claim for themselves. Jo keeps writing, even as the family she longs to hold together begins to change.
